kigo are objects that are characteristic and common to a certain period of time in the year. so in summer what are some of those plants that we come across?
these will be our kigo that will bring forth the image and feel of the season.
please note that categories and kigo suggested in this and two coming journals and not hard-and-fast rules for participants to follow but it might be a good source of inspirations and give ideas on what to write for the day.
certain flowers that commonly flourish in summer are: rose, peony, iris, dahlia, jasmine, sunflowers, geranium, daffodils, narcissus, poppy, lily, evening primrose, lotus, mimosa, morning glory, and so on.
we also have other plants that gets active in summer time, such as pitcher plant, venus trap, cactus, duckweeds on the surface of ponds.
fruits are under this same category and many fond memories of summer can be immortalized in a well written haiku in savoring fruits such as pineapple, papaya, banana, strawberry, watermelon and many others.
in your recipes/menu for meals you'll likely find these vegetables: broad beans, asparagus, cucumber, egg plant, tomato, onion, barley, black fungus, combu/seaweed.
we enjoy scenery in the field during summer and have a really good time. therefore, verdant woodland, dense foliage, cooling shades under trees are good kigo that makes the summer scenario complete.
okay, these 10 days (2nd-11th august) we will go around looking for good moments in our life that can be crystallized in a haiku! don't forget to include a plant kigo to tell us your summer experience~!
