~*~*~*~*~

haikuwrimo stands for haiku writing month and it has been an exciting event since years back. most of the active organizers of the past haikuwrimo are quite inactive on dA now. it is good and appropriate that the-haiku-club takes on the task to do one in the coming month.

it is going to be fun~! :D

all members are encouraged to submit a set of haiku, one per day for the whole month of august. if you can't do a complete set, that doesn't matter: one a day is a goal and a challenge.

if you are going to do it just post a comment here in this journal
your name (and later the link to the haiku set when the wrimo starts) will be posted in the club journal for easy access to all admin and members to view and comment. all the haiku in this set should be in a single deviation which you update each day with a new haiku.

samples of haikuwrimo sets: browse.deviantart.com/?q=haiku…

submitted sets with 10 haiku or more (somewhere in the course of august) will be included in the gallery proper of the club.

to make the wrimo even more interactive and challenging we introduce and suggest kigo for your inspirations and to prompt you to learn and enjoy writing traditional haiku:

kigo are seasonal symbols that makes the feel and atmosphere of the haiku apparent. traditional haiku by definition must have a kigo to make it fit the genre. they are keywords that correspond to the seasons of the year.

to illustrate, here are some works by the masters:

by
松尾芭蕉
Matsuo Bashou

静かさや 岩にしみ入る 蝉の声
shizukasaya iwa ni shimiiru semi no koe
Silence penetrates the rocks with the sound of crickets.

cricket, an insect that only sings in the summer makes clear the season of Bashou's solitary moment.

By
小林一茶
Kobayashi Issa

痩せ蛙負けるな一茶これにあり
yasegaeru makeruna Issa koreni ari

You thin frog
must not be defeated!
For Issa is here with you!

frogs breed and mature in the springtime. when you see them bouncing around, you know it is spring.

By
与謝蕪村
Yosa Buson

灯篭を三たびかかげぬ露ながら
tourou wo mitabi kakagenu tsuyu nagara

the third time
lanterns are hung up,
together with dewdrops.

lantern is a kigo for lunar seventh month when people put up lanterns  in remembrance of their dead loved ones.

By
正岡子規
Masaoka Shiki

いくたびも雪の深さを尋ねけり
ikutabi mo yuki no fukasa wo tazunekeri

times and again,
i question
about the depth of snow.

without question, snow is the kigo for winter.
shiki was bedridden. he asked about the depth of the snow accumulated in the garden as a favorite pastime.

notice that, english translations of the masters' haiku do not made up 5-7-5 structures, although the japanese originals do.

there are many reasons why we do not have to write english haiku with that syllables' restriction. for further information, please read up the following articles for better understanding:
wudang-mountain.deviantart.com… and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haiku

the categories suggested for the wrimo are as follow:
1st august: opening (about the beginning of a new wrimo, a new month, etc.)
2-11: plants
12-21: animals
22-31: events (weather condition, life's routine, etc.)

suggested kigo to each category will be posted as the month goes on. haijin are encouraged to write according to personal experience and observations using these kigo.
it is not a must to follow the categories and kigo but it's probably a good way to provide ideas and inspirations for those looking for a good subject matter to work on.

at the end of each category the admins will pick featured haiku that fit the category and more admins will comment on these picked ones.
complete sets will also be featured at the end of wrimo.

we look forward to august as well as your submissions~! :D:D
